Spring Sneaker Drive!

Posted by Vanessa Cowhey on May 3, 2009

Grab All Your Old Sneakers and Bring 'Em to Emerson!

We hope you have been saving your well-worn sneakers for the Go-Green committee's sneaker drive for NIKE beginning Monday, May 4th. A special box for this week-long drive will be located on the table outside the office.

Sneakers will be turned in to S.C.A.R.C.E  in Glen Ellyn, who will deliver our shoes to a special processing facility run by NIKE. Differents parts of the shoes will be shredded into small rubber and foam pellets called "Nike Grind"  which will be used for playground surfaces, running tracks, turf for soccer and football fields, and cushioning for basketball and tennis courts throughout the world. We highly recommend checking out www.nikereuseashoe.com to watch videos and slideshows that explain the process and document places where these surfaces are already in use. Since 1990, over 23 billion shoes have been collected and recycled for this purpose.
