Update: SB16 Reported As Dead

by Carol Snyder, District 205 PTA Council Legislative Chair

According to a press release from state Rep. Ron Sandack (R-Downers Grove), the School Funding Reform Act of 2014, known as SB16, has died in the House. Elmhurst District 205 was expected to lose $4.5 million in state funding under the controversial bill. On December 3rd, Speaker Madigan adjourned the veto session "sine die", meaning there are no plans for the House to reconvene for a lame-duck session.

Although SB16 is considered dead, the conversation about education funding reform is not. New legislation is sure to be introduced after the 99th General Assembly is seated in January. Please watch for future updates regarding education funding reform. Democracy is not a spectator sport, it requires the informed participation of all citizens in order to function for the benefit of all people. Thank you for taking the time to contact legislators, sign petitions and submit Witness Slips. Your voices were critical in halting the progress of SB16 and in sounding the alarm about its harmful repercussions.
