Posted by Joan Letourneau on Apr 18, 2012

Emerson will celebrate Earth Day 2012 on Friday, April 20 with a “Walk/Bike to School,” 3rd annual “Poster Contest,” and new “Eco Poetry Expo.”

Walk/Bike to SchoolEmerson students are encouraged to walk or bike to school on Friday, April 20 as part of our Earth Day celebration. The “Walking School Bus” schedule is as follows:

Bus Stop

Parent Leader

Departure Time

Fremont/Larch Miriam Bednarik 8:05 am
Fremont/Evergreen Barbara Lonergan 8:05 am
Fremont/Walnut Amy Wallace 8:05 am

Grantley/Highland Barb Uditsky/Tiffany Jensen 8:05 am
West/Belden Bonny Procajlo 8:05 am
West/Crockett Martha Wegener 8:05 am
West/Gladys Julie Deely 8:05 am

  • The “Walking School Bus” happens rain or shine.
  • All volunteer parent walkers should arrive at designated “bus stop” five (5) minutes early.
  • Parents can walk their children to a bus stop, or drive them and drop them off, but only in the care of the designated volunteer parent walker – under no circumstances should parents leave children waiting alone at a corner.
  • We encourage parents to coordinate with others on their block to ensure as many kids as possible can participate.
  • Children in grades 3 through 5 are welcome to ride their bikes. Please remind them to be safe riders with all the additional walkers. Bike riders on Fremont are encouraged to ride on the south side of the street until West Avenue. At West, the crossing guards will assist riders by crossing them north across Fremont, then west across West Ave.
  • Walkers leaving from points on Grantley and Armitage will make their way to Fremont, which will be our main “bus route” – walkers on West Ave. will travel south to the school.
  • Parent volunteers are not responsible for children who run ahead. Please make sure your children are instructed to stay with their walking group.
  • There are no walking school buses scheduled for the end of the school day, but we encourage you to walk your children home at the end of the day.

Poster Contest: Students are encouraged to create a poster and carry it while walking to school on April 20. Poster themes include, but are not limited to: Earth Day, walking or biking, the 3Rs, no idling, and waste free lunch. Entries can be turned in at Door 1 after the walk.

Eco Poetry Expo: New this year, the “Eco Poetry Expo” gives students the opportunity to write a poem expressing their feelings about the Earth and/or how they’ve learned to take care of it. One poem from each grade level will be selected to be read over the school’s public address system. Poems are due in the office by Wednesday, April 18.

All poster and poetry entries should include the student’s name, grade and teacher’s name. Entries will be posted outside of the cafeteria and will be returned to the students in mid-May.

Please see the attached flyer describing all of the highlights of this year's celebration.
