Junior Book Club Committee

What is Junior Book Club?

In Junior Book Club, students read stories and share their ideas and opinions about them in small discussion groups. The literature has been especially chosen to challenge children of all ages, spark their ideas, and promote thoughtful discussion. Discussions are led by parent volunteers trained in the Great Books Foundation’s Shared Inquiry method. Shared Inquiry discussion makes it possible for all children, regardless of reading level, to contribute with confidence and learn from one another.

Program Details

Emerson’s Junior Book Club program takes place in the fall with registration beginning at the opening day coffee and ending in late September.  In October, books and a schedule of meeting dates and stories will be sent home with each registered child.   Starting in the first week of November, each group will meet once a week, for six weeks, during the recess portion of your child’s lunch period.  This allows for 3 sessions before the Thanksgiving break and 3 sessions after. Expectations of the program will be reviewed with participants at the first Junior Great Books meeting.  Please note that students who register for Junior Great Books are expected to attend each discussion unless they have an excused absence.
